Juniata River Valley Celebrates
AMERICA 250
Mifflin County
Juniata County
2026 marks America’s 250th birthday. Mifflin and Juniata counties are celebrating with painted Liberty Bells as part of Pennsylvania’s “Bells Across PA” project.
Mifflin County’s bell sits beside the courthouse in Lewistown. Juniata County’s bell, “Beauty of the Standing Stone,” is displayed inside the Pomeroy-Academia Covered Bridge.
Early settlers from this area provide inspirational stories from the founding era. Mifflin County is named for Thomas Mifflin – George Washington’s Quartermaster General during the Revolution and a signer of the United States Constitution. Dorcas Buchanan, the first European woman to settle in what is now Mifflin County, lived through those pivotal years and is remembered as the area’s founding mother.
